From the best time to travel and what to pack, to hotels, getting around and what to expect while you are here.
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but weather patterns vary across the island. The best route often depends on when you travel and which regions you would most like to experience.
The west and south coasts are generally at their driest from around December to April, making this a popular period for combining cultural touring with time by the Indian Ocean.
The east coast follows a different weather pattern and is often at its best during the middle months of the year, giving us another coastal option when conditions elsewhere are wetter.
Tea country is cooler than the lowlands and weather can change quickly. Mist, showers and fresh evenings are part of the character of the highlands, so a light layer and rain protection are useful year-round.
Even in traditionally drier periods, tropical showers can occur. Weather varies from year to year, so we plan with the season in mind without treating any month as a guarantee.
Tell us your dates and the kind of Sri Lanka you would like to experience. We can shape the route around the season rather than forcing the same itinerary throughout the year.
A little preparation goes a long way. We will provide practical information relevant to your trip, while official entry and health requirements should always be checked before departure as they can change.
Check that your passport meets the current validity requirements for Sri Lanka and confirm the visa or electronic travel authorisation requirements that apply to your nationality before you travel.
Health advice varies according to your circumstances and can change. Speak with your doctor or a travel-health professional in good time before departure and check current official guidance.
Light, breathable clothing works well in the lowlands, with a warmer layer for the hills. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a light rain layer and modest clothing for temple visits are useful additions.
Cards are widely useful at hotels and larger establishments, while some cash is helpful for smaller purchases and local stops. We recommend carrying more than one payment method.
Tell us the ages of your children and any practical requirements when you enquire. We can consider room arrangements, suitable activities, the pace of travel and sensible breaks when shaping the trip.
Personal travel insurance is required for every guest. Choose a policy suited to your itinerary and check the cover, limits and exclusions carefully before travelling.
Personal travel insurance is required for all guests travelling with The Travel Cafe. It is your responsibility to arrange cover that is appropriate for your trip.
Before purchasing a policy, read the wording and confirm that it covers the full duration of your stay in Sri Lanka, including any additional nights or onward travel. Check that the destination and every traveller are covered, and keep the policy documents and emergency contact details accessible while travelling.
We recommend arranging insurance as soon as your travel arrangements are confirmed, so eligible cancellation cover can be in place from the outset. Policy benefits and exclusions vary by insurer; check the policy documents directly with your provider if anything is unclear.
Sri Lanka rewards a relaxed approach. Distances can look short on a map, but road conditions, towns and the landscape mean journeys often take longer than visitors expect.
Your driver-guide accompanies you throughout the trip, taking care of the driving and helping the days run smoothly. Where an experience benefits from specialist knowledge, a local or specialist guide may join you.
Touring Sri Lanka is part of the experience. We build realistic travel times and sensible stops into the itinerary rather than treating every transfer as time to be minimised.
When visiting temples and other sacred places, shoulders and knees should be covered and footwear is usually removed before entering. Your guide will help with local etiquette along the way.
Sri Lankan food can range from mild to wonderfully spicy. Bottled or appropriately filtered drinking water is the sensible choice, and dietary requirements should be shared with us before travel.
Wi-Fi is available at most hotels, although speeds can vary. Mobile data is widely useful, and your guide can help with everyday questions such as local stops, laundry or practical arrangements during the trip.
Tipping is customary in Sri Lanka but should reflect the service you receive. We can provide straightforward guidance before your trip so you know what is usual without feeling obliged at every turn.
We choose accommodation and plan each trip around how the whole experience works — not simply around star ratings or how many sights can fit into a day.
We choose hotels for the overall experience they offer, rather than simply the number of stars beside their name. Comfort, cleanliness, location, atmosphere and consistently good service all matter.
Most of the hotels we use are comfortable 3–4 star properties. Standards and official classifications can vary between Sri Lanka and other countries, so we focus on the quality and suitability of each hotel rather than relying on star ratings alone.
Different places call for different types of accommodation. A well-located city hotel, a relaxed property with a pool in the Cultural Triangle and a beachfront hotel on the coast each serve a different purpose. We select properties that make sense for where you are and what you will be doing.
The hotels proposed for your trip will be shown in your quotation, together with the relevant room arrangements and meal basis. Where necessary, an equivalent alternative may be offered subject to availability.
Your trip includes a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle appropriate for your party and itinerary, giving you the flexibility to travel at a sensible pace and stop when the day calls for it.
Your driver-guide is an important part of the trip: looking after the driving, helping with day-to-day arrangements and sharing practical local knowledge as you travel.
We do not believe a good trip needs to fill every available hour. Travel time, climate, early starts and downtime all matter, so we balance experiences with enough space to enjoy where you are.
Our published trips provide a thoughtfully planned starting point. Your dates, interests, family requirements and preferred pace can all be considered when we prepare your proposal.
We keep the planning process personal and straightforward. Your proposal will set out what is included and the arrangements relevant to your particular trip before you decide to book.
Share your preferred dates, who is travelling and the experiences that matter to you. If one of our published trips already feels right, that can be the starting point.
We shape the route and provide a quotation setting out the proposed hotels, room arrangements, meal basis, transport and included experiences.
Take time to look through the proposal and ask questions. Where appropriate, we can refine the arrangements before you confirm.
Your quotation and booking information will explain the payment arrangements and the terms that apply to your booking. Please review these carefully before confirming.
The payment schedule and applicable booking conditions will be provided with your proposal. Our Booking Terms contain the detailed conditions that apply to confirmed bookings.
